Making Art Accessible to All
Naima Wood, Gallery Owner, shares her vision and expresses the importance of continuing her grandfather's legacy.
Dorsey’s Fine Art Gallery was established over fifty years ago by Mr. Lawrence P. Dorsey and is the oldest continuously run black fine art gallery in New York City. The gallery is still operating today in Brooklyn, NY and is managed by Mr. Dorsey’s granddaughter. Mr. Dorsey was passionate about giving a voice to new artists of color to ensure that art continued to be an integral part of the community. He used proceeds from the gallery’s annual holiday benefit art auction to give back to the community. Mr. Dorsey commissioned master artists to create paintings, murals and sculptures for organizations like the Brooklyn Children’s Center and Kings County Hospital. His mission was to expose the youth to culture. He made black art accessible to all by providing a gathering place for artists and collectors.
Exhibit art with a global view that challenges our world to an inclusive focus on the African diaspora.
